ROUTE FROM GENEVA AIRPORT FRENCH SECTOR TO LES CONTAMINES

 

PLEASE NOTE IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE HAUTE SAVOIE WITHOUT SNOW CHAINS IN YOUR CAR DURING THE WINTER SEASON.

Ask at the international arrivals area information desk how to get to the French Sector.  It would also be useful to pick up one of their free maps of Geneva to supplement the directions.  Please note that the car hire offices on the French side close at 2200

 

To get to the French Sector you will be directed up one level to the check-in area where you will find an orange sign saying FRANCE.  Go through the Swiss and French passport control/Customs and into the French Sector arrivals/departure area where you will find the hire car desks.  Keep your passports handy in case you are asked to show them at the border crossings.  When you collect the car check to see if there is a Swiss Motorway Vignette on the windscreen.  It will be about 2 inches square with a motorway sign in green and white and the relevant year printed on it.  If you have one you can drive on the Swiss motorways.  

 

When you have collected the car follow the only road out of the French sector and go through a tunnel under the airport.  After the tunnel you will arrive at a T-junction. Go right here and straight through the French/Swiss border crossing, following signs for Geneve.  

 

Continue to follow signs for Geneve and do not be tempted to go on the autoroute without the Swiss Autoroute Vignette.  If you are stopped at the border post on the autoroute by the Swiss officials you will have to pay CHF40 (about £20) for a vignette.

 

(If you do have a vignette and don’t want to drive through Geneva, go onto the motorway heading for France and Chamonix Mont Blanc.  Go through the border post (10 minutes) and keep following signs for Chamonix Mt Blanc and the A40.  Pick up directions below *).

 

If you don’t have a vignette, follow the road down all the way down to the lakeside in Geneva and go along the lake until the road goes left over the first bridge.  Go over the bridge and then follow signs for France and Chamonix-Mont Blanc. Eventually you will come to the Swiss/French border again.  Go through this and follow signs for Chamonix and the autoroute A40.

 

*Keep on autoroute A40 following signs for Chamonix Mont Blanc, and stay on this to Junction 21 Passy.  Just before this junction you will see a sign, <Prochaine sortie Les Contamines Montjoie>.  There are 2 tolls (1.60 and 3.40 euros) on the autoroute so you will need some euros or a credit card.

 

Turn off at Junction 21 and go right at end of slip road.  At the second roundabout go left and into Le Fayet, going straight over another roundabout.  In Le Fayet there is a sharp left corner just by a small power station and the Parc Thermal.  Take first right at the roundabout immediately after left corner.  Drive up hill to St Gervais les Bains.

 

Go through centre of St Gervais and follow road round sharp bend to right.  Take second exit off roundabout opposite Petit Casino supermarket.  Go out of town and up hill to LCM on the D902.

 

ENTRY TO YOUR CHALET OR APARTMENT CANNOT BE GUARANTEED BEFORE 4PM

 

If you are arriving between 4pm and 6pm Saturday

 

When you arrive in Les Contamines continue through the village, just after the centre you will see a garage on your right and a bar opposite called the ‘Servan’. Either my Father or myself will be waiting there with your keys. At that point we will give you a map to your apartment or chalet.

 

If you are arriving after 6pm Saturday, or on another day of the week.

 

Chalet rentals – we will make special arrangements with you in advance.

 

Apartment rentals – the collection point will be my apartment, Appt 1, 275 route du Plan du Moulin.

As you arrive in Les Contamines you will pass through an area called Tresse, at the end of this area on your left you will see the ‘Auberge du Chalezan’, 100m further up the road there is a right turn (Y junction) take the right turn, the signs are for the ‘Domaine skiable’.  Follow this road for 2 kms, you will go over 3 speed bumps, when you get to the fourth you will see a restaurant on your right,’ L’Air du Temps’, I live in this building, the entry door id just to the left or the restaurant as you look at the building, my apartment is on the ground floor at the back behind the stair case, No. 1.

LES CONTAMINES TO GENEVA AIRPORT FRENCH SECTOR

 

Leave Chalet Kiana and go right at bottom of hill

St Gervais – go right at first roundabout, continue down hill

Le Fayet – go left at roundabout (2nd Exit), out of Le Fayet and follow blue signs for A40 and Geneve

As you approach Geneva follow signs for Geneve and Gaillard, go straight on when motorway forks right for Paris

Continue through the French/Swiss border post and follow the road into Geneva, (Route de Malagnou, see large scale map). Continue until junction with 4 other roads.

Take half right down Rue Adrien Lachenal and continue over one junction, then stay in centre or left lane and go left into a major road. (Ave Pictet Rochemont or Versonnex)

Follow this over bridge by Geneva fountain (on right) and go right immediately after bridge.

Follow this road along lakeside and continue straight on following signs for Ferney and then, at a roundabout, for Ferney and airport.  

Do NOT take the left turn for the airport but carry on through the tunnel under the airport and go through the Swiss/French customs post.

Immediately after the border post turn left for Aeroport Secteur France.  

Follow this road (it goes back through a parallel tunnel under the airport) and you will arrive at the airport and car hire return area for the French sector.

 

When you are in the airport ask how to reach the main terminal.  You will be shown towards international departures, you then go through French passport control, Swiss passport control, the arrivals baggage hall and into the arrivals area.  Then you will have to go up one level to the check in area.
